Schedule

Welcome to the "Ramble On - Great Lakes - Power Cruise/Race" blog.  People who know and have done similar things have looked at us a little funny when we tell them where we are going, and in particular, how fast we are trying to do it.

The quick summary is that we are sailing through the Great Lakes to participate in the Port Huron to Mackinac race, cruise with friends in the North Channel for a while, and then return to Kingston.

The race starts on Saturday, July 23rd, and is about 200nm long.  Good wind from the right direction for the whole race could have us done in ~30 hours.  Last year, the range was 39-49 hours, before that, some near 60 hours,  but it looks like a reasonable average is about 48 hours.

The whole expedition starts on July 13th, when our delivery crew embarks on what may be the most challenging part of the entire excursion:  getting to the race on time!    The quick summary of our sequence of passages is as follows:

  • Kingston to Port Weller (straight through)
  • Welland Canal (full day)
  • Lake Erie (a couple of days)
  • Detroit River, Lake St Claire, St Claire River to Port Huron!
  • Port Huron to Mackinac (race)
  • Mackinac to Spanish (to meet our friends and my two boys)
  • Spanish to various locations in the North Channel (better part of a week)
  • Then reverse the entire track back to Kingston
Total distance:  1500-1900nm (2800-3500km) ... yikes!

I hope to update this blog regularly with updates to our current location, some pictures, GPS tracks.

Stay tuned!
