Mile 916: Killarney

We woke up to a still morning in The Pool.  No sign of our turtle buddy, maybe turtles are evening feeders.    A number of our neighbours had already departed by the time we awoke and we could hear the clinking of chains and windlasses as the next round of people prepared to head back out of Baie Fine.

Breakfast this morning was pancakes with our hand picked blueberries and some thick cut bacon ... yum.

Our next destination was Killarney.  Not to far away, should be there by afternoon.

As we approached the Killarney channel we were faced with a new type of vessel traffic.  Sea Planes, lots of them.  We treat them like boats, except we give them a more generous berth due to prop.   The channel is fairly narrow, and funnels the wind quite dramatically.  Once we found out berth, we were experiencing 23+ knots of winds for much of the evening.

After our experience in Little Current (not the nicest choice of places to stay), we decided to tour the channel while reading our Port book before selecting our place to stay.  This lead us to the Killarney Mountain Lodge.  A groovy looking place of brown stained wood, immaculate cut grass, swimming pool and all sorts other amenities.   We pulled into the main marina dock to pump out and find out where to park for the night.  The staff were exceptionally nice and helpful directed to our slip.

Not only were there sea planes, there we two unique looking pusher planes parked right at the marine.  One of them eventually drove into the water, and took off, and then buzzed the channel a few times.  A very interesting design, and these planes were immaculate.

We went for a wander through the town.  There is a street just along the shore of the channel, and a number of the stores service both the water side and the street side equally.  We stopped in at a art/photography gallery, and continued along checking our little store and shops.  We passed by Herbert Fisheries, fish fry hut, and decided that would be dinner for the evening.  There is still a lake fishing boat moored there, that goes out daily, and catches fresh white fish, so we figured it would be super fresh.  This place is popular, as we had to wait an hour before our order was ready (just fish and chips!).

After dinner, some of us headed to the pool for a re-freshing swim.  The evenings plane was to cook up some nachos, and watch a bit of Goodfellas after getting our mosquito netting in place.  The mosquitoes really have a magic moment when they go from zero, to hundreds, so you have to act fast to limit the number that get into the boat.  We got about half through the movie and called it quits for the night.

When we awoke, as usual, a number of boaters had already left for the next leg of their journey.  We decided  to top up on ice, and do the same.  We headed our the channel, while making our morning coffee and breakfast.

Next stop: Tobermory
